The Cardano Token Registry provides a means to register off-chain token metadata to map to on-chain identifiers (typically hashes representing asset IDs, output locking scripts, or token forging policies).

CIP26 Off-Chain Metadata Registry (mainnet)

This is the CIP26 off-chain metadata registry for mainnet. If you intend to register any metadata for on-chain assets that exist on the publicly available testnets only (e.g. preview and preprod environments) please use the metadata-registry from IOHK.

Background

This repository provides a means to register off-chain token metadata that can map to on-chain identifiers (typically hashes representing asset IDs, output locking scripts, or token forging policies).

A server exposes the functionality of a key-value store, allowing users and applications to query registry entries through a RESTful API.

While this registry is limited in scope to handle native tokens only, it will also serve to facilitate a discussion and introduce a standard for a metadata distribution system that is currently put forward as a draft CIP.

Process

New registration

New submissions to this registry will take the form of a GitHub Pull Request with the addition of one JSON file to the mappings/ folder. Submissions will be subject to automated checking for well-formedness and human vetting before being merged to the registry.

Updating existing entries

Modification of entries in this registry require a GitHub Pull Request with the modification of one JSON file in the mappings/ folder. Submissions will be subject to automated checking for well-formedness and human vetting before being merged to the registry.

Semantic content of registry entries

Each entry contains the following information:

The policy field is optional in order to support Plutus Smart-Contracts which are not linked to a set of signing keys by default. It is used in priority if present. Otherwise, signature verification is performed using user-provided trusted keys.

Submission well-formedness rules

  1. Submissions to the registry must consist of a single commit, directly off the master branch of the cardano-token-registry repository.

  2. Submissions must add or modify a singular file in the mappings/ folder. Multiple mappings should be split across multiple PRs.

  3. The file name must match the encoded "subject" key of the entry, all lowercase.

  4. The maximum file size of a single metadata entry is 370KB.

Use Cases

CIP-26 is ideal for:

  • Fungible tokens requiring static metadata, such as stablecoins or utility tokens.
  • Projects that prioritize low transaction costs and simplicity.
  • Assets that do not require frequent metadata updates or on-chain programmability.

Pros of CIP-26

  • Cost-Effective: Since metadata is stored off-chain, CIP-26 avoids the additional transaction costs associated with on-chain storage, making it cheaper to mint and manage assets.
  • Simplicity: The JSON-based structure is straightforward, making it easy for developers to create and submit metadata to the Cardano Token Registry.
  • Wide Adoption: CIP-26 is widely supported by existing Cardano tools, wallets, and marketplaces, ensuring broad compatibility.
  • Lightweight: Off-chain storage reduces the blockchain’s data load, improving scalability for simple use cases.

Cons of CIP-26

  • Centralization Risk: The Cardano Token Registry introduces a degree of centralization, as it is managed by the Cardano Foundation. This creates a single point of failure.
  • Limited Flexibility: CIP-26 metadata is static, meaning updates require manual submission to the registry, which can be cumbersome for dynamic use cases like evolving NFTs.
  • Inaccessibility to Smart Contracts: Off-chain metadata cannot be directly accessed by Plutus smart contracts, limiting its use in dApps that require on-chain logic.
  • Trust Dependency: Users and developers must trust the registry’s integrity and the process for metadata submission and validation.
  • Periodicly updated: Token's Metadata might be available from hours to days after request being submitted to token registry as manual review is required and server takes a few hours to re-sync all tokens metadata.

Summary

CIP-26 is a practical choice for projects that need a simple, cost-effective way to attach static metadata to native assets. Its reliance on an off-chain registry makes it accessible and widely supported but introduces centralization and limits its suitability for dynamic or smart contract-dependent use cases. Developers should weigh these trade-offs when deciding whether CIP-26 meets their project’s needs.
